Antonio de Torres (1817–1892)

The Father of the Classical Guitar

Antonio de Torres permanently changed the history of the guitar. He was not just a luthier but a true revolutionary who redefined the design of the classical guitar into the form we recognize today.

Born in Almería, Spain, Torres began building guitars in the mid-19th century. He invented and developed the fan bracing system, which strengthened the soundboard, reduced the instrument’s weight, and produced a fuller, more resonant tone than ever before.

His guitars were played by legendary masters such as Francisco Tárrega, Miguel Llobet, and many others.

Today, only about 80–90 guitars by Torres are confirmed to exist worldwide. These rare instruments are regarded as priceless historical treasures, with more than half preserved in major museums. Their scarcity and historical significance make them among the most expensive guitars in the world.

At Fonzo, Thailand, we are deeply proud to hold one of these rare Torres guitars, built in 1859 (FE10A). According to historical records, this instrument once belonged to Miguel Llobet, one of the world’s most important composers and guitarists.
