Matthias Dammann, born in 1953 in Germany, is one of the most esteemed contemporary luthiers, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in classical guitar construction. Dammann's most notable contribution to the world of guitar making is his invention of the double-top (or "sandwich") guitar, a revolutionary design that has redefined the acoustic and tonal capabilities of classical guitars since the 1990s. This innovative construction features two thin layers of wood on the guitar's soundboard, with a layer of lightweight material (often Nomex or another composite) sandwiched in between. This design allows for greater resonance, projection, and sustain, making his guitars uniquely powerful and responsive.

Due to the meticulous craftsmanship and time required to produce each instrument, Dammann’s guitars are extremely rare and highly sought after, with waiting lists that can span over 20 years. His guitars are also among the most expensive on the market, prized for their distinctive sound and exceptional build quality. World-class guitarists, including David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, and others, have played Dammann guitars, bringing his innovations to prestigious stages worldwide and solidifying his status as one of the most influential luthiers in modern classical guitar history.
