daniel friederich 1972

A remarkable survivor from one of the most important names in 20th-century classical guitar making!

We are deeply honored to welcome an extraordinary 1972 Daniel Friederich into the Fonzo Selection collection. This is an instrument that represents both the unmistakable musical character of Friederich and a truly exceptional state of preservation.

Daniel Friederich’s guitars occupy a special place in the history of the classical guitar. Their sound is immediately recognizable: refined and noble, with remarkable clarity, depth, and an almost vocal quality in the trebles. The basses are rich and beautifully controlled, while the entire register carries an extraordinary palette of colors. There is warmth without losing definition, power without harshness, and a remarkable sensitivity that allows the smallest musical nuance to speak naturally. This 1972 instrument embodies those qualities beautifully. More than half a century after it was made, its voice remains wonderfully alive, mature, complex, resonant, and full of character.

Yet what makes this particular Friederich especially remarkable is its condition. For a guitar of more than 50 years of age, the level of preservation is astonishing. Throughout our experience with important historical instruments, we have rarely encountered a Friederich from this period kept to such an extraordinary standard. The guitar shows almost no visible scratches, has no cracks or crack repairs, and remains exceptionally clean throughout. Most importantly, everything has been preserved in its original condition.

To encounter an important Friederich is always special. To encounter a 1972 example with this combination of musical quality, originality, and extraordinary preservation is something else entirely. For Fonzo Selection, this is exactly what defines a collection-level historical instrument: an important maker, an unmistakable voice, remarkable originality, and a condition that allows us to experience the instrument today remarkably close to how it has been preserved through the decades.
