Gernot Wagner 2013 Ex. Jason Vieaux - When Mastery Meets Mastery
Some guitars are remembered for the name on their label. Others become inseparable from the musicians who played them. This 2013 Gernot Wagner, formerly owned and played by Jason Vieaux, belongs to the both
Built in Frankfurt by Gernot Wagner, the instrument represents an important chapter in the development of the modern concert guitar. Wagner is regarded as one of the significant makers associated with the evolution of double-top construction, an approach that sought to increase responsiveness, projection and dynamic range while preserving the tonal refinement and expressive character of the classical guitar.
This instrument features a sophisticated double-top soundboard with spruce on the exterior and cedar within, paired with East Indian rosewood back and sides. The construction allows the soundboard to respond with remarkable immediacy. Even under a delicate touch, the instrument speaks clearly; when pushed, it offers the projection, separation and dynamic headroom demanded by the modern concert stage.
Yet a great concert guitar is defined by more than volume. What distinguishes Wagner’s work is the balance between power and musicality. The instrument offers clarity between individual voices, a wide spectrum of tonal colors and the ability to move naturally from intimate pianissimo passages to powerful climaxes. It is a guitar designed not simply to project sound, but to give the musician greater freedom of expression.
What makes this particular guitar especially meaningful, however, is its provenance. It was the concert instrument of Grammy Award–winning guitarist Jason Vieaux and became closely identified with his playing during an important period of his international career. In Vieaux’s hands, the instrument was not simply preserved, it was played, developed, and given a musical history.
Vieaux is one of the most distinguished American classical guitarists of his generation. Winner of First Prize at the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition at only nineteen, he went on to build an international career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and educator. His album Play received the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo, and his performances have brought him to major concert stages and collaborations with orchestras and leading musicians around the world.
Throughout his career, Vieaux has been particularly admired for the qualities he himself values in an instrument: color, flexibility and the ability to adapt to different musical characters. His repertoire moves effortlessly between Bach, Spanish music, contemporary works, jazz-influenced repertoire and new transcriptions. For a musician with such a broad musical language, a guitar must do much more than simply produce a beautiful sound, it must be capable of changing character with the music. This is where his relationship with Gernot Wagner becomes especially meaningful.
Vieaux had played Wagner guitars for many years and spoke openly about his admiration for Wagner’s double-top construction. He was particularly impressed by Wagner’s ability to create an instrument with considerable power without producing what Vieaux regarded as an artificial or “synthetic” character. Instead, he found in Wagner’s guitars the qualities he sought most, a wide range of colors and exceptional musical flexibility.
When discussing this 2013 Wagner after playing it for a little over a year, Vieaux remarked on how wonderfully the guitar was developing. It was not simply another instrument passing briefly through the hands of a great guitarist. It became his chosen musical partner. For years afterward, Vieaux’s official biographies continued to identify the 2013 Gernot Wagner specifically as his performing instrument. It accompanied him through an important period of his mature international career, appearing with an artist known for extraordinary precision, tonal control and an ability to make the guitar speak naturally across an unusually diverse repertoire. That long association gives this instrument a different kind of provenance.
