The Innovator of the Modern Classical Guitar Sound

In the world of modern classical guitar, Greg Smallman, an Australian luthier, has become a legend who forever changed the image and sound of the instrument. He pioneered the lattice bracing system, a radical departure from traditional structures, producing a tone that is clearer, deeper, and more powerful than ever before.

Smallman incorporated modern materials such as balsa wood and carbon fiber to construct soundboards that are both lightweight and strong. This gave his guitars lightning-fast responsiveness, wide dynamic range, and a rich, precise tone—even at the softest volumes.

Among all the guitars Smallman has ever built, the most historically significant is the 1992 Greg Smallman, once owned by John Williams, widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Williams used this very guitar in numerous important performances and recordings, including the legendary Seville Concert, which became an iconic representation of the modern classical guitar to audiences worldwide.

In October 2024, Fonzo Guitar Thailand was deeply honored to receive this 1992 Smallman guitar directly from John Williams in London, UK.

This is more than the acquisition of a world-class instrument—it is the preservation of a “sound of history”, once in the hands of an artist who inspired millions. It stands as a symbol of excellence, dedication, and a true love for music.
